War Photographer by Nachtwey Book Report/Review Example

Essays on War Photographer by Nachtwey Book Report/Review The paper "War Photographer by Nachtwey" is a good example of a book review on visual arts and film studies. This is a book that is written on a particular photographer who takes photographs of war scenes. The reading is all about the effects of war on society. This can be well attributed to the fact that the writer presents the many photographs that the photographer takes on various war scenes. The photographs are the clear implications of pain and suffering among the victims. The writer thinks that it is very crucial if an action was taken in order to end the raging wars. This, in regard to him, would assist him in the reduction of the various horrible cases covered by the photographer. The writer emphasizes his implications by ensuring that there are as many photographs of the war scenes as possible (Nachtwey) Among the photographs presented, there is a photograph of an individual with serious bruises in the face. He has a very irregular facial texture due to a cause that is proposed said to be fire burns. These fire burns were a result of war where he was set on fire inside a house. This tries to indicate the intensity of the effects of the wars. The [photograph indicates that the individual is recovering from the tragic bruises. However, the photograph also indicates that the bruises are recovering poorly. This is a possibility of poor medical attention among victims of war (Nachtwey)This in general highlights the need for the required measures to be taken to stop wars. It also indicates the courageousness of the photographer. He goes to astonishing heights to take photographs that uncover various evils caused by wear that have to be stopped immediately (Nachtwey)

House Burning Down Essay Example For Students

House Burning Down Essay It was in the middle of winter on a dark smoggy night, chills were running through the house in and out of my room likea quiet ghost silently coming and silently going. As I lie awakein my bed thinking of what the next day should bring, my eyesstart to grow heavy as I doze off. In the distance I hear a faintbooming sound, soon it starts getting louder and louder and stilllouder until I could hear nothing but the noise. I wasunpleasantly startled and hurried over to my window. As I lookout I could see nothing but smoke and fire, catching this bysurprised I ran to my little brothers room, finding no one. Thenin the distance I could hear faint voices of terror calling myname. It sounded as if it was coming from out side, so I ran asfast as my Nike slippers could carry me down the stairs andoutside into my front yard. I find the rest of my family there, along with my neighbors and their son, my best friend. I juststood there in horror with the rest of my family and friends. Wehad no idea what had happened. The next morning I really dontremember very clearly, but what I did was reading the news paperand coming across an article about a house burning down not tofar from mine. I really didnt know what exactly to think at thattime until it all clicked upstairs. The noise the night beforehad been the house burning down and the natural gas lineexploding. Later in the article it said that our block of houseswouldnt have any natural gas heating until the line wasrepaired. The first thing I did was run to the kitchen, findingmy Mother and Father there fixing breakfast. I started talking sofast I really dont even know what came out. My Mom told me tocalm down and sit at the table. Doing so she gave me a glass ofmilk, and seeing that I was distressed sat down next to me andasked me what was on my mind. Taking full advantage of herattention I told her as slowly and detailed as possible at thetime being. As soon as I had finished my frantic attempt to slerall that out, she didnt laugh at me but just got that look inher eyes where you know that she didnt believe a word of it. Thefist thing she said in response was Where did you hear aboutthis? I answered her as fast as possible In the news paperStunned at my at my quick answer she told me to bring her thearticle. So I ran back up the stairs and snatched the paper frommy red race car shaped bed. When I got down stairs I laid thearticle out flat in front of my moms face. A subtle but shockedlook arose on my mothers face, as she sank deeper into herchair. Shutting off the radio, I sat down next to my dad askinghim what we were going to do for heat, he just answered I dontknow I just dont know. shaking his head in resistance. Laterthat day I was over at a friends house who had heat. We wereplaying a video game and eating chips in his living room. Thewalls had many game heads on them, one of the nicer ones was awhole stuffed mountain lion that his dad once had a special tagto hunt. The whole time I was there I was brainstorming on how toget heat in our house. Soon I was in the back seat of ourextended cab black GMC pickup. My little brother was on my momslap and my dad was just starting to drive onto the onramp. Whichis not an easy task on a daily basis, when you live in New York. .u191e975e9ddd989e2580afb98c4b7c85 , .u191e975e9ddd989e2580afb98c4b7c85 .postImageUrl , .u191e975e9ddd989e2580afb98c4b7c85 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u191e975e9ddd989e2580afb98c4b7c85 , .u191e975e9ddd989e2580afb98c4b7c85:hover , .u191e975e9ddd989e2580afb98c4b7c85:visited , .u191e975e9ddd989e2580afb98c4b7c85:active { border:0!important; } .u191e975e9ddd989e2580afb98c4b7c85 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u191e975e9ddd989e2580afb98c4b7c85 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u191e975e9ddd989e2580afb98c4b7c85:active , .u191e975e9ddd989e2580afb98c4b7c85:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u191e975e9ddd989e2580afb98c4b7c85 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u191e975e9ddd989e2580afb98c4b7c85 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u191e975e9ddd989e2580afb98c4b7c85 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u191e975e9ddd989e2580afb98c4b7c85 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u191e975e9ddd989e2580afb98c4b7c85:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u191e975e9ddd989e2580afb98c4b7c85 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u191e975e9ddd989e2580afb98c4b7c85 .u191e975e9ddd989e2580afb98c4b7c85-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u191e975e9ddd989e2580afb98c4b7c85:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Gatsby is Presented Mysteriously EssayAs soon as we started getting close to the freeway there was ahuge traffic jam. Crime And Punishment Essays (955 words) - London Boroughs, Crime

Crime And Punishment Essays (955 words) - London Boroughs, Crime Crime and Punishment Our topic for this paper is Crime and Punishment. There are several different issues on this subject. We chose three main points to talk about: The Crimes, the People who solved them, and the different types of punishments. These are the topics we chose for our report. Crime in the nineteeth century was rapid though out London. But because of all of the poverty and sickness in the streets, crime was the only way to survive. Most of the crimes that took place in London were crimes that involved stealing. Pickpocket gangs and street gamblers were a regular sight when walking down a major London street. Prostitution was also a big money maker on the streets, done by both girls and boys. But crimes though out the middle class and rich were mostly property crimes and disputes which made up 90% of all crimes committed by the upper-class. In Victorian England and like today there a two categories which crimes fall under. "Indictable" which is the same as our felony crimes that make up all of the major crimes. These crimes consist of: Murder, armed robbery, burglary, larceny, rape, and assaults on the police. The next called category is called " Summery " crimes which is equal to our misdemeanor crimes. Summery crimes were all minor crimes such as: Property crimes, Vagrancy, Drunkenness, Prostitution, Minor Larceny , and all other minor offenses. Probably the most famous criminal in the Victorian period was " Jack the Ripper ". Jack the Ripper was " the first modern sexual serial killer" ( Sugden, pg.2) Jack's trademark was the killing of female prostitutes. But not only did he kill them, he would surgically remove organs and intrails and place them near the dead body. "Jack the Ripper" wasn't his only nickname, he was also called " the Whitechaple murder " because the body's were found near the Whitechapel Road, and " The Leather Apron" because of a man that would come by and beat up the prostitutes for no reason. Jack the Ripper is credited for 9 killings, but police think that he might be responsible for more. All of the killing accrued with in one square mile. Jack is described as carrying a long knife in which he would cut open his victims, and a black Gladstone bag, the contents of which is unknown. ( Sugden, pg.1) Jack the Ripper's identity is unknown which is probably why this case is so famous. It is rumored that Jack the Ripper was a member of the royal family, and that people knew of his identity but wanted to keep it a secret. The London Metropolitan Police system was created in 1829, after the public need for security has been told to the government. The Police Department consisted of 3000 policemen. The Policeman then were poorly paid. A constable's usual pay was 19 shillings, a week. An inspector got around 2 pounds, and some of that money was taken off for the cost of there uniform. There uniform was a blue tail coat with there number and letter of their division on the collar and hat. There only weapon was a short wooden baton. The government had a hard time finding recruits. Most of there men were old soldiers, and many of them were dismissed from the force for drunkenness. Later on the force started to become a real Police force, and the people of London appreciated it. The officers also were given many nicknames such as: Blue devils, peeler, and bobby. In 10 years the London Metropolitan Police Force cut the number of crimes in London by half. The crimes in Victorian England did not go without it's punishments. In early Victorian England Public hanging's were watched by many people, and the stocks were placed in the center of town where people would look at you and even beat you and humiliated you. But in 1838 the ending of all public tortures and executions gave way and became out lawed. These things lead to the building of prisons. In 1730 the prisons were at there worst and were not made for long term offenders. These prisons were so bad because they were privately owned and the

Business Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words - 1

Business - Essay Example An individual who does not find the above issues aligned to the organizational objectives would thus suffer from lack of performance, at least to what the organizations consider necessary. (Matthews, Zeidner, and Roberts, 2004, 9). Is this therefore a direct cause effect relationship to the emotional intelligence of a human being? Emotional Intelligence – the concept Individuals who do not perceive well and are incapable of understanding and managing emotions are expected to perform lesser in organizations. Issue such as co ordination and group conflicts become more. Such can be harmful in cases where the organization is closely knit and works in small or medium capacity.   Similarly individuals who have the trait of being averse to power and control are also less likely to do well in a highly hierarchical organization. Their performances are more likely to increase in situations of autonomic groups and teams who are given the liberty of taking their own decisions. The asses sments of individual’s emotional intelligence can also be helpful for organizing methods of employee empowerment and training curriculum. Although traits of individuals are difficult to change, the abilities can be worked upon. These abilities are often a reflection of the emotional intelligence of people and hence assessing these factors of emotional intelligence will help organizations to develop the abilities of its employees, which in turn would result in better performance of individuals. (Hersen, 2004, 203) Critical Literature Review In the 1940s, David Wechsler was the first to suggest that associated components of intelligence could play a crucial role in the success of a life of an individual. Later in 1985, Wayne Payne introduced the word emotional intelligence as a concept in his doctoral thesis. Since then it has become a subject matter of many researchers with respect to their quantification as well as the various effects they may have in different aspects of hum an life. However to understand the co relation between Emotional Intelligence and Employee Performance, it is necessary to understand the concept of performance for an employee both from his point of view as well as the organizations’. The study of performance has derived from an organizational need to manage activities to ensure that goals and objectives are met effectively and efficiently. Various motivational theories have also stated the importance of motivation in enhancing the performance levels and efficiency of an individual. Studies on organizational behavior also indicate the importance of social and mental structure of an individual in understanding how the person will adapt, align and perform under the organizational framework. High emphasis is put on perception, values and ethics of an individual. Thus is it very clear that an individual’s emotional quotient is a factor as to how the individuals respond to situations and whether they can perform. In such s cenario therefore measuring the emotional intelligence can be a critical reflective as to the overall performance of an employee. (Shields, 2007, 180) Three main models currently used to calculate the emotional intelligence: Ability Models: Claims Emotional Intelligence includes four types of abilities such as Perceiving Emotions, Using Emotions, Understanding Emotions and Managing Emotions. Each of the above factors represents the emotional outlook of an individual towards his/her performance. An individual who can perceive

Problems In Adulthood Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Problems In Adulthood - Essay Example From this discussion it is clear that the problem between generations is one which is immemorial. â€Å"No generation has a complete grip on the imagination and work of the next one, not mine and not your parents’, not if you refuse to let it be so.† Today’s seniors have a set of principles which was once considered to be the basis for human existence. However, these ideals are constantly changing, so that these principles are no longer fundamental. New ideas are constantly taking the place of old ones. This is sometimes seen as a detriment for seniors, as they cannot accept the new ideals of the younger generation.   In order for there to be a functioning society, there should be a balance between old and new principles. However, this balance has been elusive. This research highlights that  the problem between competing ideals of different generations is not new.   It has existed since time immemorial. It can be seen on the micro level in families, as the e lder wants to instruct the children on what is best. The children, for their part, want independence from their parents, and want to show that they can make it in life without the support of their parents.   This gap is widening, not narrowing, as the culture rapidly changes and the economy becomes more global and complex. The younger set changes because they are influenced by the world around them.  The generation gap is made worse by the fact that the parents are increasingly more into earning money than talking with their children.
